Message: Hey gang! I’m listening to episode 119 and recently listened to the ALP episode that Puke and Andrew were on. I found it to be very interesting. A recurring theme I've noticed is Puke mentioning that he gets depressed and everyone kind of blowing it off. I get the feeling no one else on the show has ever really been depressed. I find that a lot of people who have never been depressed have no idea what it's like, usually they think it's just being really sad and that all you need to do is not be sad, be happy! Really bad depression gets into an area where you simply no longer seem to have the ability to feel any 'good' emotions, you often feel nothing or negative emotions like anger/sadness/fear/disgust/shame/etc.
I’ve started sharing “Depression Part Two” from Hyperbole and a Half with people who haven’t been depressed and don’t seem understand it. People who have been depressed who I’ve shown it to have all said that their depression was at least similar.
I would not suggest taking anti-depressants unless you're really depressed; barely functional, seriously contemplating suicide depressed. I've been this way twice in my life. The first time was about 10 years ago. I was put on Zoloft. I don't remember much about it but my boyfriend tells me the Zoloft made me a zombie, without the brain eating. I didn't start feeling better until I got off it.
The 2nd time was about 2 years ago. I was put on Wellbutrin and it was completely different from the Zoloft. For at least one day I was in a very manic state and felt like I could do anything, complete opposite of how I felt before. I was depressed about stuff but just getting the motivation to do things again helped me get better over the course of about a month.
I stopped taking Wellbutrin early this year because I felt over all fine and didn’t feel like it was really doing anything for me anymore. Around this time my boyfriend started taking Kratom and to wean himself off vicodin that he took for back pain. Kratom is a plant grown in the Indonesia and surrounding areas. Certain types of Kratom have a very mood uplifting high-like effect. I started taking it about every other day just for that and have noticed that my mood has been much more stable. It might be something to look into.
